As you read this story, more than 130 hostages are still being held in Gaza – men, women and children all unaccounted for – as a result of the Hamas terrorist attacks that occurred in Israel, on October 7, 2023.
In the six months since October 7, the Azrieli Foundation has committed approximately $20 million in emergency funding to address high-priority needs. In the immediate aftermath of the terrorist attacks, we deployed funds to assist first responders and hospitals, and provide medical equipment and trauma support. We are now shifting focus from immediate requirements to medium- and long-term needs, mobilizing resources as necessary.
One of the recipients is the Raoul Wallenberg Centre for Human Rights (RWCHR), a Canadian non-governmental organization dedicated to pursuing justice through protecting and promoting human rights. RWCHR is helping the families of those kidnapped in several ways. For example, in December 2023, RWCHR announced the assembly of a coalition of human rights organizations calling for the immediate release of all hostages. In February of 2024, RWCHR filed a comprehensive brief with the International Criminal Court (ICC) on behalf of all remaining hostages. Their work in raising awareness of the plight of the hostages, and seeking justice for the victims, is partly supported by the Foundation’s emergency grants.
The Azrieli Foundation continues to monitor the events in Israel and the growing antisemitism in Canada and is working to provide assistance to those in need.
