On September 25th, a new playground for children with disabilities had its first go-round with users thanks to a $50,000 grant from the Azrieli Foundation, as well as funds from other donors.
Located in Montreal, the new Inclusive Playground is purpose-built for children with physical disabilities and sensory impairments. It includes tactile, sensory and wheelchair-accessible components that provide children with the opportunity to enjoy outdoor activity and the benefits of play.
After a one-year delay, the playground finally opened at an official ceremony attended by approximately 100 members of the community. The playground is located on the grounds of the Mackay Centre and Philip E. Layton schools, which service students who are deaf, physically disabled and/or have a communication disorder.
The funds to build the playground were raised through the Habilitas Foundation. Sean Zikman, Director of Philanthropy for the Habilitas Foundation thanked the Azrieli Foundation for its funding. He said, “We cannot thank you enough for helping us turn our dream of creating an Inclusive Playground into a reality. The incredible support of the Azrieli Foundation for the ‘Every Child Has A Right To Play’ capital campaign has touched our hearts and made a lasting impact on the lives of so many children.”
