On Wednesday 30th October 2024, the Azrieli Fellows Program hosted its orientation for the incoming International Postdoctoral Fellows at the elegant Carlton Hotel in Tel Aviv. The venue provided a stunning view overlooking the beach and the iconic Gordon Pool, creating an inviting atmosphere for the new 2024-25 cohort.

Upon arrival, attendees mingled over coffee and a variety of tasty treats. The new Fellows and the Azrieli Fellows Program team then gathered around a long table and were welcomed by Dr. Julie Mattos-Hall, the program’s Fellowship Manager. Professor Hermona Soreq, the program’s Senior Academic Advisor, Dr. Aviad Stollman, Global Director, and Ms. Rochelle Avitan, Program Director, followed with inspirational words. Hermona and Aviad spoke about the unique opportunities afforded by the fellowship, highlighting the chance for interdisciplinary collaboration, and Rochelle provided insights into the fellowship’s history, emphasizing the achievements and generosity of David Azrieli and his family. All expressed pride in welcoming these dedicated scholars to Israel.

Ms. Jenia Kelner, Wellbeing Officer, organized a creative icebreaker that encouraged the Fellows and staff to reflect and connect by selecting a card featuring a unique shoe, explaining what it meant to them. Attendees learned about the diverse backgrounds of the new Fellows, who hail from countries such as the Czech Republic, Russia, Germany, Italy, France, Romania, and more. Research subjects included such diverse topics as ritual books and interreligious interactions in the early-modern period, the impact of climate change on parasites, and determining how fruit bats navigate. As they shared stories and laughter, the Fellows quickly formed a sense of camaraderie, setting the stage for meaningful collaborations and friendships.

Julie outlined the key components of the program, emphasizing that it is much more than just a grant. She highlighted the comprehensive nature of the program, which includes workshops, networking opportunities, and various resources designed to support the Fellows’ development. Julie then handed over to Mr. Assaf Leviton, Programming Coordinator, who introduced the Fellows to the various workshops the program will be offering this year. Jenia concluded by speaking about her work, which focuses on the wellbeing of the Fellows and helping them to integrate into life in Israel. The orientation ended with a delicious lunch.

Since some members of this cohort are currently abroad and will join the program later in the year, the team looks forward to meeting the remaining members of this talented group soon. The Azrieli Fellows Program extends its congratulations and best wishes to the incoming cohort of International Postdoctoral Fellows.
