Azrieli Fellows Workshops 2026-2027

Back to all workshops
  • Turning Data into a Clear Visual Story

Synopsis

We are surrounded by data, but data alone rarely convinces anyone. The skill that makes the difference — in a paper, a grant application, a conference talk, or a conversation with a non-specialist — is the ability to turn numbers into a clear, honest, and memorable visual story. This hands-on workshop introduces the core principles of data visualization and data storytelling; no graphic design or programming background is required.

We will move from question to chart to message: how to choose the right visualization for what you want to say, how to design it so that it is both accurate and easy to read, and how to structure a sequence of visuals into a narrative that leads an audience from context to insight to action. Throughout, the focus is practical and example-driven, using tools participants already have, such as Excel and presentation software.

Outcomes

  • Distinguish exploratory from explanatory analysis, and communicate findings that resonate with a given audience.
  • Choose the right chart or visualization for the scenario, and extract the central message from complex information.
  • Design graphs that balance clarity and aesthetics with accuracy, without misleading the viewer.
  • Build a data story with a clear narrative arc, from context through insight to a call to action.
