Understanding What the Azrieli Foundation Typically Does Not Fund
At the Azrieli Foundation, we are committed to supporting initiatives that reflect our values, demonstrate meaningful impact, and advance knowledge and social good in Canada and Israel. To ensure that applicants can invest their time and effort wisely, we have outlined the types of projects and requests that we typically do not fund.
This information is designed to guide prospective grantees in determining whether their proposal is likely to align with our priorities. While some exceptions may be considered in special circumstances, the following categories are generally outside our funding scope.
General Exclusions
- Capital campaigns (when the request’s sole purpose)
- Endowments and endowed chairs
- Debt financing
- Fundraising campaign expenses
- Partisan political organizations or religious activities
- Direct grants to individuals, except through Foundation-managed fellowships, scholarships, or prize programs
- Organizations lacking stable financial health, strong governance, or audited financial statements
- Organizations whose values or ethics conflict with those of the Azrieli Foundation
- Projects or activities that could place the Foundation in conflict with Canadian charity law or compliance requirements
- Organizations without paid staff, less than two years of experience in the field, or no evidence of consistent impact evaluation
Science & Healthcare
- IT infrastructure (as the sole purpose of the request)
- Endowed chair positions and endowment funds (with limited case-by-case exceptions)
- Individual pieces of laboratory equipment (as the sole purpose of the request)
- Laboratory renovations
- Student tuition, individual salaries, or stipend requests
- Health services or medical care (except certain caregiving-related applications, considered case by case with the Canadian Centre for Caregiving Excellence)
- Medical equipment for general service delivery
- Healthcare or clinical research projects outside Canada or Israel
- Medical fellowship programs outside Canada or Israel
- Longitudinal studies and clinical trials (unless co-funded, with clearly defined added value aligned with our objectives)
- Venture capital for commercial activities
Community
- Endowment funds
- Capital projects (renovations, property purchase, construction)
- Organizations outside Toronto and Montreal
- Programs for which the Foundation would be the sole funder
- Retroactive costs
- Religious or partisan political activities
- International development initiatives
- Projects reliant on “fiscal partners”
Music, Art & Culture
- Individual artists
- Debt financing
- Retroactive program or project costs
- Endowment financing
- Media projects (e.g., audiovisual recordings, publishing, websites, apps)
- Commissioning, creation, or production of new artistic works
- Productions or performances involving a significant number of amateur performers
Education
- For-profit organizations
- Individual applications
- International development initiatives
- Endowment funds
- Retroactive costs
- Capital projects (renovations, property purchase, construction)
- Programs for which the Foundation would be the sole funder
- Programs without a clear educational focus (e.g., purely recreational after-school activities)
- Programs not directed at vulnerable populations facing barriers to education
- Programs serving school-age children outside the ages of 15–29
- Programs that are not evidence-based or lack monitoring and evaluation
Neurodiverse Initiatives
- Respite programming
- Navigation services and supports
- Day programming, therapies, or early intervention for children and youth (our focus is on young adults and adults)
- Organizations outside Montreal and Toronto (for the most part)
- Development, scaling, or evaluation of services that are intended for commercialization
- Organizations or social enterprises less than three years old
- Organizations or enterprises where neurodivergent employees are not paid at least minimum wage and provided with benefits
Holocaust Education & Legacy
